Monday, August 10

OPEN:  Secretary Duncan will kick off his Back-to-School campaign at the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center.
National Museum of American History, 14th Street and Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. (Reporters should enter through Constitution Avenue entrance)
 
Noon EDT
OPEN: Secretary Duncan will join Rahm Emanuel, White House chief of staff, and Melody Barnes, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, for the Department’s summer reading initiative, “Read to the Top!” The “Mountain Mushers,” a team of retired education therapy dogs that travel the country inspiring children to read and to learn, along with their owners, will attend the event.

Tuesday-Wednesday, August 11 - 12
 
Note: Secretary Duncan, along with Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsak, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan and Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu, will travel to Alaska to discuss rural issues.
 
Tuesday:
2:40 – 3:10 p.m. AKDT
OPEN: Secretary Duncan will tour the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

OPEN: Secretary Duncan will hold a “Listening and Learning” forum on education reform.

OPEN: The Secretary will participate in the White House Rural Tour forum, followed by a question-and-answer period from the audience. Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell, Bethel Mayor Joseph Klejka, U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, and Secretaries Vilsak, Donovan and Chu will participate.
