Re: the Education Week article about the grant contest for high schools: President Obama's reference to German vocational education was well aimed, but is misrepresented by Andrew Rothstein. The Germans and their neighbours absolutely do not believe "everybody needs this"; instead, their programmes are designed for that (majority, in their case) portion of their young people who are unlikely to attend university and who still need a way to make a living in the world. If anyone tries to force career and technical programmes on "everybody" here, that will provide yet another reason for academically ambitious families to flee our misguided public schools. By contrast, what we need is an orientation cycle at the beginning of the high school years, to force (temporary, reversible) decisions about career or college paths on our teens and their families, who might adjust to reality steadily, in a systematic manner, and with help, rather than denying reality and then getting slammed by it at age 18, when too many end up sinking because they weren't taught to swim.
