The StudentsFirst grades assume an agreed set of standards that state policies are supposed to meet; but that is lightyears from reality, and one would expect Michelle to know that. In fact, an inadequate approach to assessment is central to the flaws in a set of policy positions that are, on the whole, helpful. There is no agreement on what "effectiveness" means for teachers, largely because teachers' job descriptions, when properly written, are so various, as are the assessment approaches for the various subjects and grades that teachers teac, and the causes behind changes in student test scores. And from a political standpoint, how can such harsh grading be helpful in making friends and influencing people? StudentsFirst should immediately go into reassessment mode.
