"Flipping" classrooms -- which essentially means recording lectures (nothing new), posting them on the Internet, and sending them over the web to students (which are genuinely new) -- is a really important development, perhaps the most promising use of technology to transform learning and teaching in this century. The evidence is accumulating that this works, in higher and secondary education, in a variety of classrooms, especially those that have traditionally relied on expository lectures. Next we should expect a decoupling of the roles of lecturer and classroom tutor, since a few particularly skilled lecturers whose videos might feature superior production values stand a chance to displace the more ordinary efforts of regular classroom teachers.
