image from www.washingtonpost.com
This chart from the CBPP via Wonkblog (Back-to-school budget cuts) shows most states have cut education funding over the past five years -- including ones you might not expect Oregon (13pct), Virginia (10pct) Colorado (9pct), and Ohio (8pct).

Vermont’s cut spending on students? That surprises me, honestly. My parents' school taxes have gone up every year for as long as I can remember. They just got this year's bill, and my mom was complaining at the $200 increase. Despite the increase, they laid off a few teachers, dropped bus service to the high school, combined elementary and middle school bus routes, and the high school asked parents to purchase textbooks if their child wants to take a foreign language.

Education is no longer on top of this country's agenda. I have seen more cuts in the last three years than I have seen in the previous 20 years. Higher education, in particular, has suffered tremendously because states are cutting funds from college budgets, and student tuition is rising everywhere. In Georgia, three colleges have fired workers because there is no money to keep them. No one knows what will happen next. We must invest in our colleges if we plan to get the best and brightest employees in the workplace. I am truly disenchanted about the educational system in this state and nation.
