Part of me wonders if President Obama's clear focus on family first will help or hurt him. I'm all for a supportive dad who puts kids before their job, but when it comes to the role of a president, I'm not sure it's what the people want to hear.

I watched the President's speech with my middle school daughter. I was delighted with the President's references to his role as a father. His remark to his daughters about school the next day connected him to the priorities in my family in a real and relevant way. It reinforced that school is critically important (even if you are the president's daughters out at an event being watched world-wide) -- which is exactly what I seek to convey to my own daughter. My daughter really got the message, and I loved it.
