Morning Video: Reading By Third Grade (Or Else)
There's an event livestreaming from Brookings right now about Student Promotion and Retention: What’s Best for Kids? As you've read in the WSJ and from the Bush folks in FL, 3rd grade reading is back, and so is retention. Here's a new report about this, also from Brookings. I think I read somewhere that 13 states have new reading by 3rd initiatives in the works. The hashtag is #readingbythird.

I think whether or not a child will become a successful reader, and by extension, a successful learner, is really a product of their environment before school. My mom quit her job to stay home and raise us. She made sure we had dozens of books and would hit up book sales to bring new reading material into our lives. I was able to read decently before I entered kindergarten growing up, and I attribute most of my academic success as a person to that fact. So, personally, this movement’s success will be limited by how much of an effort it makes to ensure parents are doing more to get their children involved.
