Here's the streaming video from the House education committee hearing on alternative certification (once it starts), and the press release touting the event.

Is this in response to the alt cert debate during last week's appropriations markup, or just a booster shot of some kind?  You may already know.  I'll try and find out. 

 

***MEDIA ADVISORY*** TOMORROW: Subcommittee to Examine Alternative Teacher Certification Programs

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, July 24 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, chaired by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), will hold a hearing entitled, “Education Reforms: Discussing the Value of Alternative Teacher Certification Programs.” The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.  Studies have consistently shown teacher quality to be one of the most influential factors in student academic achievement. Current law, however, can make it difficult for schools to attract and retain the most effective educators. Many schools have turned to teachers certified through alternative routes to help fill shortages in particular geographic areas, fields, and classrooms with unique student needs. Each year, approximately one third of teachers obtain their certification through alternate routes. These capable educators often bring a wide range of real-world experience that strengthens the overall quality of the teaching profession. Tuesday’s hearing will provide members an opportunity to learn more about alternative teacher certification programs and the benefits these educators can offer students and schools. I found it remarkable how little concern this actually dispelled. It seems to be more patches, not really addressing the problem at large, whether limited by economy or otherwise.
