Quotes: A Big, Black, Sullen-Faced, Illiterate Girl From The Ghetto

"Precious" is a film for blacks and a challenge to drop our own emotional armor and embrace a real-life story we have been minimizing for a long time -- that of a big, black, sullen-faced, illiterate girl who lives in the depths of the ghetto and in all likelihood will stay there." (Salon)

I've been thinking about how to get everyone I know to read Armond White's review of Precious, http://www.nypress.com/article-20554-pride-precious.html.

He's got uhh....a different take than Salon, and just about every other review I've read. He manages to use the review as a jumping off point for a great discussion about class, race, privilege, the Oprah you can do it empire, liberal guilt, on and on. Amazing review.
